New Work Scotland

Collective are proud to announce the 2010 edition of New Work Scotland Programme, an initiative launched by the gallery in 2000, which is recognised internationally. Offering Scottish-based emerging artists and art writers their first significant solo opportunity, the programme identifies and supports through an annual open application, some of the most promising new talent in the country.

The 2010 artist selection panel consisted of artist Jordan Baseman, Michelle Cotton of Cubitt, London, and Lesley Young of The Salford Restoration Office, while MAP have collaborated with Collective in the selection of two writers. So, artists Shelly Nadashi, Nicolas Party, Jacob Kerray and Catherine Payton, join writers Norman Hogg and Laura Edbrook on this year’s programme.

Nicolas Party is on the NWSP 6-week residency at Studio Voltaire, London,
a collaboration launched in 2008. This opportunity offers access to new audiences and networks; Party is working towards a NWSP event in London.

The writing commission has a flexible remit. This year the writers are producing both critical and creative texts based on the work of the selected artists. These will be published in the annual NWSP newspaper and online at www.collectivegallery.net. And, for the first time, a MAP residency, based in the Glasgow office, is to be offered to Laura Edbrook.

New work by Glasgow-based Shelly Nadashi and Jacob Kerray will open the season. In December Edinburgh College of Art graduate Catherine Payton and Glasgow School of Art MFA graduate Nicolas Party, will launch the December strand, alongside a new bookwork.

Over the past 11 years, previous NWSP artists and writers have progressed to become successful international practitioners. It is important that each year NWSP offers fresh opportunities to support, develop and challenge Scotland’s innovative emergent activity.
