Mary Redmond works in the medium of sculpture, using found objects and a wide range of raw materials. These are then re-shaped and altered, which may mean they are bent, bashed or painted, and then put together with other meticulously made elements.

‘I have travelled extensively in Asia and
this has had a strong influence on my
work. I am currently researching traditional
instruments, specifically those which
utilise unexpected and basic materials
such as bamboo and stone. The image of
the Komuso is mystifying and captivating,
the sound created speaks both of the nature
of the bamboo and the breath of the player.
For the Komuso, the otherworldly sound
promotes spiritual growth and detachment.
These elusive elements are the starting
point of new work.’
